They were not recaptured, but large numbers of Irishmen in Manchester were seized for questioning. Much of the police procedure was unofficial, and the evidence they collected was questionable. Of the five men eventually charged with Sergeant Brett’s murder, only four had actually been present at the event. Rice, Kelly and Deasy had escaped to the United States, and a William Allen was charged with having fired the fatal shot. The others charged were Mr Maguire, a marine on leave who had not been involved at all, and three Fenians, Edward Condon, Philip Larkin and Michael O’Brien. All were found guilty of murder.

The convicted Fenians all made speeches from the dock, proclaiming their republican principles but expressing regret for the murder. Condon ended by saying, ‘You will soon send us before God, and I am perfectly prepared to go. I have nothing to regret, or to retract or take back. I shall only say, “God Save Ireland”!’ This phrase was echoed by them all, and became a powerful catch-cry for Irish nationalism.

Knowing nothing of the locality I rushed up what appeared to be a street, but proved to be only a blind alley with no outlet. When I started back to make my way out the crowd gave way, but a detective struck me on the head with a heavy club, and this brought me to my knees for an instant. Rising, however, again I pushed on, tearing myself loose from those who tried to grab me, until I came to a narrow bridge crossing a canal. Here, among others, there were planted in my path two big, half-drunken women, who flung themselves on me, locking their arms around my neck, as if I were their long-lost brother. I had never tackled a proposition of that kind before, and no time was allowed me to consider how to deal with it. The detectives and mob closed in, and, after being badly battered on the head, I was seized and overpowered.
